The 30 American EDM Festivals You Need to Attend in 2018

Its January and that means that festival season is quickly approaching. I've put together a list of the best 30 EDM festivals in the US that I think everyone should attend in 2018 and why. Check out the 30 below and tell me which ones you've been to already!

If you want a list of the 15 Canadian EDM festivals you need to attend in 2018, check it out HERE

1. Electric Forest

When: June 21-24 and June 28-July 1 (two back to back weekends)
Where: Double J Ranch- Rothbury, Michigan
Lineup:

Website: https://www.electricforestfestival.com/
Why You Should Go: This is the pinnacle of American EDM festivals. Not only is it a music festival, it is truly an interactive immersive experience. Besides having 7 stages packed with amazing artists, Electric Forest features art installations, incredible visual and sound production, interactive experiences, theatrical performances, yoga classes, speakers and workshops, and much much more. The thing that makes Forest truly amazing, is that you can spend your 4 days there experiencing the festival in a million different ways!

""Happy Forest" is a greeting, a reminder, an encouragement, and a farewell all rolled up in one phrase. New people quickly become new friends. Happiness is a state of mind , and all of the 30,000 exuberant people around you are constant bubbling reminders that you're currently in the best place on earth. Fleeting encounters become lasting memories and "happy forest" is heard in all of those moments, whispered quietly or yelled enthusiastically.
After flying back from weekend 1 of my forest forest, I was left feeling a bit glum that I wasn't going to be in Michigan while the whole second weekend was going to pass by without me. So like any rational person, I washed all my muddy rave gear, packed my bags, hopped in a van and bought a ticket to weekend 2. Best decision ever. I couldn't have been luckier to get to camp with this group, or to have met all the insanely wonderful people I found while dancing from 3pm til sunrise all four days. I literally did only exactly what I wanted to do every day in the festival, seeing who I wanted to see, meeting up with friends if I could, making new friends if I didn't, and all the while dancing the. whole. time. Never have I felt so alive or connected with the other festival goers. COME TO ELECTRIC FOREST!"
-Kevin Davis

"Electric Forest is the epitome of a "more than the music" festival. Even though there are 8 stages, you don't feel like you are wasting time if you aren't at a set. Whether you are walking around the firest just staring at the lights, or going on one of the scavenger hunts, getting "married" to an inanimate object, or talking to people on the telephones in the firest; there is always something to do. I will 100% be back at Forest in the future."
-Kevin Michael

2. Burning Man

When: August 26 - September 3
Where: Black Rock City, Nevada
Lineup: There isn't really one... read more about the lack of the lineup and the music at Burning Man HERE
Website: https://burningman.org/
Why You Should Go: Burning Man is not really a music festival, but it is one of the most unique experiences you can have in the US; which is why it was put on this list as #2. Burning Man is a burn, an art installation, a music festival and a life changing experience all wrapped into one. Nine days in Black Rock City, a city created in the Nevada desert by the Burning Man attendees, with only the ability to barter for the items you need will surely be a mind-opening experience. I highly suggest everyone check out Burning Man in their lifetime, but be extremely diligent in your preparation for this burn. Also keep in kind, this is a burn that is more about the experience than the music.

3. EDC Las Vegas

When: May 18-20
Where: Las Vegas Motor Speedway- Las Vegas, Nevada
Lineup:

Website: https://lasvegas.electricdaisycarnival.com/
Why You Should Go: This is THE electronic music festival to go to. Featuring 3 days of the best EDM artists in the entire world, EDC Las Vegas is the festival that any EDM lover should make their pilgrimage to. Featuring an entire carnival during the festival (hence the name Electric Daisy Carnival), top notch light and sound production, the best artists you can see at the time and over 200,000 attendees; EDC Vegas is the place to be. Not for the faint-hearted, EDC Vegas is in the Nevada desert and also goes until 9 am every morning. Make sure to get your beauty rest before and get ready for the best 3 days of the year.

Also check out other EDC events: EDC Mexico and EDC Orlando
EDC Mexico: February 24-25 in Mexico City, 2018 lineup already announced

4. Ultra

When: March 23-25
Where: Bayfront Park- Miami, Florida
Lineup:

miami-lineup-phase1-2018-3.jpg

Website: https://ultramusicfestival.com/
Why You Should Go: Ultra and all of Miami Music Week are the kickstarters of EDM for the year. Happening in March, Ultra is one of the first festivals of the year and artists use this to release new music and test out new music and sets on the Ultra attendees. Expect all the artists to bring out their new music and their best sets for this festival to launch off EDM and the 2018 festival season. Besides Ultra on the weekend, Miami Music Week also features pool parties and shows at clubs the whole week leading up to and during Ultra. Expect days and days of non-stop music (literally non-stop because clubs don’t close until around 2pm the next day)!

"My first ultra was an awesome time overall. The stage production was out of this world, especially the Megastructure. You can find basically every genre of electronic music you want, with a few rappers mixed in as well. The crowd was also diverse in the fact that people from all over the world travel to Miami for the festival each year. Since it is the first major festival of the year, all the artists are debuting new music and putting on the best sets to get people excited for them for the rest of the year."
-Kevin Michael

Also check out Rapture and all of Miami Music Week
Rapture Music Festival:
March 22 (Day before Ultra) at the Historic Virginia Key Park in Miami. 2018 lineup TBA but 2017 is listed below. "Rapture features today’s top underground house and techno talent in an idyllic beachside setting."
Miami Music Week: March 20-25 at various locations throughout Miami. Miami Music Week includes many different day and night parties leading up to Ultra and also after parties for Ultra itself. Events continuously added.

5. Hulaween

When: October 25-29
Where: Spirit of Suwannee Music Park- Live Oak, Florida
Lineup: 2018 lineup TBA but check out last years lineup for an idea of what to expect. Lineup normally drops around September.

Website: https://www.suwanneehulaween.com/
Why You Should Go: Hulaween is ranked #3 on this list because of the total experience it brings. On top of being during Halloween weekend, it’s also located at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in north Florida. In my opinion, I think this is the coolest festival venue in the US. Featuring lakes, mossy oaks, swamp vibes and an expansive camping area within the mossy forests; it really is beautiful. Add the chilly October weather, everyone in Halloween costumes and mist from the lakes between the mossy oaks, and you really have a unique and spooky vibe. Last year’s lineup included a mix of indie, jam and EDM acts.

"My favorite "standard" festival of the year was anything but standard. You could camp wherever you could find room, you have running water in the campsites, you can hear the music from one of the stages while still at camp. The Spirit Lake art installations were amazing; with live painters, murals and 3D projection mapping over the lake. What used to be a mostly jam festival had the perfect blend of jam bands with bass and house artists. Everybody there was friendly, water was easy to find, and the food and merchandise vendors were all great. The venue as welcoming of hte festival goers with open arms in a way that no other venue had been in my experience."
-Kevin Michael

Why You Should Go: 2018 is the first year Dirtybird Campout has a new additional location, Dirtybird Campout East Coast! Because of the techno, Movement draws an older and more responsible crowd than most festivals. The people, the lineup and the location in Detroit along the river really give the festival its unique vibe. Last year featured some acts like Test Pilot (Deadmau5’s alter ego), Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer, Barclay Crenshaw, The Belleville Three, Carl Craig, Cajmere, Dusky, DVS1, Nicole Moudaber, Golf Clap, Paco Osuna, Dixon, Kevin Saunderson, Jamie Jones, and Drumcell.

Why You Should Go: Electric Zoo is guaranteed to always have one of the best lineups of the year. In terms of experience, its not as good as festivals like Electric Forest or Hulaween; but in my opinion, Electric Zoo is the number one festival in terms of lineups. With 3 days straight of never ending fire sets, it’s one of those festivals where all 5 stages are playing good music at the same time and it doesn’t really matter what stage you end up at because you’re going to have a good time. Last year’s lineup featured Grum, Sasha & John Digweed, Above & Beyond, Tchami, Excision, Spag Heddy, Crankdat, Jaykode, QUIX, Malaa, REZZ, Drezo, Wax Motif, Brohug, No Mana, Blackgummy, Claude VonStroke, Victor Calderone, Deadmau5 & Eric Prydz, Thomas Jack, De La Swing, Claptone, The Black Madonna, Subfocus, JOYRYDE, BIJOU, Dixon and Yotto.

Why You Should Go: Who doesn’t love a 3-day dinosaur themed all bass festival hosted by Excision? Lost Lands first year was in 2017, and to say they delivered would be an understatement. Excision went above and beyond to get people’s feedback on what features they did and did not want at the festival- and then actually listened! imagine-music-festival-final-lineup-2017.jpg

Website: http://www.imaginefestival.com/
Why You Should Go: Imagine is one of those up and coming festivals that you know will be one of the big names in the next couple of years. Imagine started off as a 2 day city festival in Midtown Atlanta at Masquerade Music Park and has now graduated to a 3 day camping festival at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. 2017 highlighted the growth in Imagine; with a change in dates to make the festival at a cooler time, safer campgrounds, and by Sunday; shorter lines. They really surprised last year with an amazing and diverse lineup and I’m expecting a similar lineup this year.

25. Moonrise

When: 2018 date not announced but generally the first weekend in August
Where: Pimlico Race Track- Baltimore, Maryland
Lineup: 2018 lineup TBA. Check out 2017's lineup below.

Website: http://www.moonrisefestival.com/
Why You Should Go: A 3-day non-camping festival located in Baltimore, Moonrise boasts an impressive lineup featuring a good mix of bass, house and trance acts. Recovering from a questionable year in 2016, 2017 proved that Moonrise is making big changes. With a huge volunteer staff, they were able to pass out entire water bottles and snack bars for free to Moonrise attendees. They also walked around with fans and water sprayers to cool people down during sets. There were volunteers walking by about every 10 minutes, so they were on top of providing free water and the ability to cool down.

Where: Two locations on the same nights (1) Colorado Convention Center- Denver, Colorado (2) Rawhide Event Center- Phoenix, Arizona

Decadence_2017_Lineup_Poster_FINAL_126.jpg

Website: http://decadencenye.com/
Why You Should Go: A 2-day New Year’s Eve festival held in Denver, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona on the same nights. The Denver festival is the bigger festival and tends to have bigger names on the lineup but the Phoenix festival is also loaded with quality artists. 2017’s Denver lineup included acts like Bassnectar, Justice, ODESZA, Rufus Du Sol, Porter Robinson, Getter, Louis the Child, Space Jesus and many more…

27. Snowglobe

When: Dates TBA but always on NYE weekend
Where: Lake Tahoe Community College- South Lake Tahoe, California
Lineup: See the 2017 lineup below.

Website: http://snowglobemusicfestival.com/
Why You Should Go: A 3-day New Year’s Eve festival in Lake Tahoe … really enough said. Just pack warm ski wear/winter coats for the festival! Go a few days ahead of time or stay a few days after to add skiing/snowboarding at Heavenly! Featuring the likes of Tycho, Porter Robinson, Troyboi, Lane 8, Justin Martin, Shiba San, Moon Boots, Graves, etc. in 2017, expect another big lineup for 2018.

28. Bonnaroo

When: June 7-10
Where: Manchester, Tennessee
Lineup:

rooadmat18-initial-980x1515.jpg

Website: https://www.bonnaroo.com/
Why You Should Go: Don't get me wrong, Bonnaroo is the quintessential American festival. But I put it so far down this list because this is a list for EDM festivals and Bonnarro is mostly jam, indie, rock and pop music. Although the lineup does feature some great EDM artists this year like Bassnectar, Virtual Self (Porter Robinson's new alter ego), The Glitch Mob, Shiba San, Chris Lake, Billy Kenny b2b Mija and Space Jesus; the lineup is mostly artists of other genres. Bonnaroo is a cool festival and offers an extremely diverse and stacked lineup every year. It's also a great festival for first-time festival goers!

"Hands down favorite festival is Bonnaroo- you can catch me on the farm every year. Originally known for its jam band mentality, the festival has opened up to a wider variety of genres: funk, indie, rap, rock, edm, folk, pop and alternative. Its the 3rd and 4th tier artists on the lineup that catch everyone's attention- this is the place to discover new and upcoming acts. There's something about Bonnaroo that totes this quirky magic, and it comes mostly from the attendees, not necessarily just the music. Four days with 100,000 people really encourages this take on temporary community, where everyone looks out for one another and the well known motto is "radiate positivity.""
-Blake Hamilton

29. Spring Awakening

When: June 8-10
Where: Addams-Medill Park- Chicago, Illinois
Lineup: 2018 lineup TBA. Check out 2017's lineup below.

Website: https://www.springawakeningfestival.com/
Why You Should Go: Spring Awakening is  3 day city fest in Chicago. It has changed venues in the past few years and the new venue may not be in the best part of Chicago, but SAMF always brings a packed lineup. Heavy on the trance and house, expect names like Gorgon City, Paul van Dyk, Rufus du Sol, Lane 8, Thomas Jack, Malaa, Mija, Duke Dumont, Armin van Buuren, Zhu and many many more

30. Das Energi
